The low-altitude economy is developing rapidly around the world. The South Korean government recently announced an ambitious industrial support plan. It plans to create public demand for drones worth 2 trillion won (about 1.3 billion US dollars) in the next five years.
This plan is a core part of its "K-Drone Lead" strategy. The government aims to use strong policies and market demand to help the local drone industry break development limits and lift its global competitiveness.

South Korea’s drone industry has long had many small companies. There are around 600 drone manufacturers in the country. Most of them are small and micro enterprises with annual sales below 170 million won.
These firms lack strong core technologies. They rely heavily on key parts imported from China and other countries. The whole drone industrial chain thus has weak risk resistance and little say in the global market.
To fix these problems, the South Korean government decides to fully mobilize resources. It will quickly build up 2 trillion won worth of public demand. This will change the old development model and ensure stable market support for large-scale investment in the drone sector.
The government has released 10 key tasks to carry out the "K-Drone Lead" strategy. Most notably, it will set up a national team under the Prime Minister’s Office. This team will manage and guide work on drones and anti-drone technologies nationwide.
Besides, the government will push forward the standardization of drone parts. It will also offer targeted financial subsidies and tax breaks. These policy and financial measures will support the sound growth of the domestic drone industry.
Apart from large public purchases, South Korea is building a complete industrial ecosystem and technical advantages. It has world-leading 5G networks and smart city facilities. The country is promoting the commercial use of drones in traffic monitoring, logistics delivery and emergency response.
The South Korean military also takes an active part in fostering the drone industry. It has launched a training program named "500,000 Drone Troops". It plans to buy tens of thousands of commercial drones for training within this year. The military requires priority use of homemade parts. This brings steady orders for local drone firms in the defense field.
In the future, the release of 2 trillion won public demand and the implementation of supporting policies will drive rapid growth of South Korea’s drone industry.
With the full rollout of the "K-Drone Lead" strategy, the country hopes to help small businesses survive and cut reliance on foreign core technologies. It also plans to cultivate a number of globally competitive leading enterprises in the next decade. Its final goal is to become one of the top players in the global drone industry.
